Van Buren cleanup program reports picking up 1,424 bags of litter last year

Two men collect trash Feb. 17 as part of Keep Van Buren Beautiful's Community Service Worker Program in Van Buren. The program reported that 212 participants filled 1,424 30-gallon size trash bags with items picked up off city streets in 2023. The program's workers are assigned by District Court Judge Charles Baker, and work a certain amount of time instead of paying a fine for misdemeanor crimes. VAN BUREN -- A program designed to clean up Crawford County's largest city while allowing people to work off paying fines for misdemeanor crimes reported picking up more trash in 2023 than in any of the past five years.
